Social Media: Pinterest

Pinterest is a visual discovery tool that people can use to collect ideas for their different projects and interests. It can also be used to visually showcase items (such as food dishes for a restaurant) or visually processed instructions (such as art instuction sheets).

People create and share collections (called "boards") of visual bookmarks (called "Pins" - images that have either been uploaded or linked from a website) that they use to do things like plan trips and projects, organize events or save articles and recipes. Users can have several boards, each with a different theme.

Users can search those 'boards' for anything that interests them.

Other users "repin" pins from boards that interest them. In other words that they can "pin" another user's image to their own board.

Users can share Pins they have pinned to their boards via Twitter or Facebook.

Other users can click on any shared pin to see which board the image is pinned in, who pinned the image previously, where the original pin is from, and who has liked, commented, or repinned the image.

Pinterest also gives the option of making boards "secret" so that the user can pin to and view boards that only the user can see when logged into their own account.
